ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE COURSES

International students who wish to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts can enroll in the FOUNDATION COURSE to acquire skills in the Italian language, general culture, art history of European countries and any other discipline useful for improving incoming skills for the course of study chosen.

The Academy also organizes an ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE COURSE FOR THE TURANDOT PROGRAM, reserved for students of Chinese nationality.

WHAT IT IS

The Turandot Project was launched in Italy in 2009 and was set up with the aim of promoting the Italian academic system concerning the arts, music and design in China as well as to facilitate the access of students of Chinese nationality to Italian academic institutions belonging to the system of Higher Education in Art, Music and Dance – AFAM.
Through the Turandot Project, Chinese students wishing to enrol in a course at the ‘Pietro Vannucci’ Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia can obtain an entry visa to Italy without knowing Italian beforehand.
The programme requires students to successfully complete a 10-month Italian language course at this institution before starting the academic course of interest.
Once they have passed the final exam of the Turandot Course held at this Academy, Chinese students are exempt from the Italian test and can complete their enrolment in Italy without having to return to China.
In order to carry out the Turandot programme, the Academy may enter into agreements with foreign university-level training institutes or agencies recognised by the territory to which it entrusts prior recruitment.

OBJECTIVES

The Turandot Project has two main objectives:

  • to guarantee a consistent and continuous daily exposure to the Italian language, in order to allow the achievement of the initial B1/B2 level with the aim of a continuous growth of linguistic skills useful to understand the specific academic vocabulary for the study of the chosen academic course; language lessons will be aimed at developing the following skills: listening, reading, elaboration of a written text, grammatical reflection, expression and conversation;
  • fostering the students’ integration into Italian culture through historical and cultural knowledge of Italy and the Italian style.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is held in Italian. It consists of Italian language and culture lessons and guided tours for a total of 1000 hours, divided into 40 weeks (from November to September with an interruption from 1 August to 21 August). Lessons are held at the premises identified by the Institute’s Management and last a minimum of 4 hours a day for 5 days a week, mainly in the mornings from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 to 13.30.
Attendance at classes is compulsory.
The Italian language lessons are taught by qualified teachers and are aimed at bringing students to a full knowledge and understanding of the academic vocabulary specific to their studies.
Supporting figures such as language mediators and art historians take care of the programme of guided tours.
The lessons develop the following skills: listening, reading, ability to write a text, ability to express oneself in a conversation, grammatical reflection.
On the first day of the course, students will take a placement test (written and oral) to establish their starting language level. If necessary, classes will be differentiated according to different language levels. Periodic monitoring will be carried out, with written and/or oral tests, on the progress of language learning. At the end of the course there will be an Italian language exam that will certify the B1 level of competence of the Council of Europe, to be integrated with the B2 level at the end of the degree course.
The programme also includes optional supplementary activities such as excursions, specific workshops and guided visits to cities of art in Italy or Europe, the cost of which is borne by the students.
The course will be activated subject to enrolment of a minimum number of 15 students.

WHO IT IS AIMED AT

The course is aimed at Chinese students who do not know Italian or who wish to improve their level of Italian in order to enrol in a course of study entirely in Italian.
To be admitted to the Turandot programme, students must have passed the “Gao Kao” exam (minimum 300/750) and the “Artistic Specialisation” exam (“Yi Shu Kao Shi” or “Yikao”). The sum of the marks obtained (Gao Kao + Yikao) must have a total average of at least 400/750 or equivalent, in line with the indications provided by the Italian Diplomatic Representation in China.
For students from Hong Kong and Macao, who are not subject to the Gao Kao examination system, the study documentation must be assessed by the AFAM Institution and the competent Italian Consular Authority, in order to verify the requirements for admission to study courses in Italy.
